Dappled clouds drifting

Deep blue clings to horizon

Pale circle up high.

Sharp branches on shore

Throw reflections onto lake

Blurred in water’s face.

Cold lingers in peaks

Early spring drained of color

Except evergreens.

Above distant peaks

Layers of clouds grow darker

Orange sun burns through.

Just before sunrise

As light reshapes waking earth

Pale blush floats on lake.

Gulls bridge sea and sky

Arc of wings to fly between

Blue infinities.

Gilt by setting sun

Sea rocks burning sky to sleep

Waves lap edge of earth.

Pod of pelicans

Reflections soar on blue waves

As they stand quite still.

Sunrays slice through sky

Sparkle on shimmering waves

Etch dark clouds with gold.
